If you are currently middle-aged, you face a 90% chance of developing high blood pressure
… at some time in the next decade.
Others at risk for developing high blood pressure are the overweight, those with a family history of high blood pressure, and those with high-normal blood pressure (130–139/85–89 mm Hg).
The good news is, treatment can control high blood pressure.
About 90 percent of people with high blood pressure have “essential” hypertension, meaning that the cause is unknown. It can strike anyone, regardless of age, sex, race, economic status, or background. However, your chances of developing high blood pressure increase if you have a family history of hypertension or you are African American, a man over age 35, a woman past menopause, overweight, or are sensitive to salt.
Women have some special risks. Birth control pills can cause high blood pressure in certain women. If you are a woman with a b family history of high blood pressure, ask your health professional to take your blood pressure before prescribing birth control pills, and then have it checked every 6 months as long as you take them.
Your blood pressure changes constantly to adjust your circulation to your activities. It increases during exercise and decreases during sleep. During rest, the systolic, first number in a normal reading is less than 140, and the diastolic, second number is less than 90 (e.g., 139/89).
High blood pressure is caused by arteriosclerosis (“hardening” of the arteries). A person is diagnosed as having high blood pressure if their blood pressure remains at 140/90 or more. Your physician will not make this diagnosis until you have been checked 3 or more times, and your blood pressure is found to be high each time.
In addition, lifestyle changes can prevent and control high blood pressure. These include losing weight if overweight (losing 10 lbs can help), increasing physical activity (walking 30 minutes per day can help), following a healthy eating plan, that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy foods, choosing and preparing foods with less salt and sodium, and if you drink alcoholic beverages, drinking in moderation.
If lifestyle changes alone are not effective in keeping your blood pressure controlled, consult your health professional and consider attending a free introductory presentation on Vedic Meditation, and discover how to enjoy a better quality of life without medication and the harmful side effects.

This book offers new hope and insight for those with high blood pressure but it is not for hypertensives alone. The knowledge which Dr Lovell-Smith presents in his book is timely and relevant, and its exposition is long overdue.
