The Dangers of Cigarette / Tobacco Use
With all the information and media attention about the dangers of cigarette use, why do people still smoke?
And, unlike the dangers of cigarette use, the threat that secondhand smoke creates is especially insidious because it affects the health of adults and children who cannot always control the air they breathe.
Cigarette smoking is the greatest single cause of preventable early death in New Zealand. Around 4700 New Zealanders die prematurely because of smoking each year – that’s 12 deaths every day.
Smoking kills more people in New Zealand than the total number killed by drinking alcohol, taking drugs, murder, suicide, road crashes, air crashes, poisoning, drowning, fires, falls, lightning and electrocution.
For example, the chance of:
- Dying in a single airline trip is- 1in 815,000.
- Dying in a single skydiving jump is -1 in 96,296.
- Being killed in a car accident before your 65th birthday is -1 in 143.
- and the Chance that smoking will kill you by the age of 65 – 1 in 5.
Because cigarette smoking and tobacco use is an acquired behavior, or one that an individual chooses, smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in our society.
Cigarettes are as addictive as cocaine and heroin, which is why people keep on smoking, even though they want to stop. And if that is not reason enough to consider quitting, here are another twenty five reasons:

Secondhand Smoke is a Preventable Health Risk
Question:
Should we be alarmed about the danger of environmental tobacco smoke?
Yes: A recent study from Harvard University reports that secondhand smoke may even double a person’s risk of heart disease.
Other research shows overwhelmingly that long term exposure to secondhand smoke – also known other people’s smoke, environmental tobacco smoke / ETS, passive smoke or sidestream smoke – will lead to many diseases for children and adults.
Children:
- Children do not choose to live in smoke-filled home
- The lungs and other respiratory tissue of children and infants are not fully developed; therefore, they may be more susceptible to harm from secondhand smoke
Adults:
- Until recently, non-smoking adults had little control over the smoky air they breathe at work restaurants, bars, and casinos
- People that live with others who smoke and people who socialise with those who smoke, where the room or car is often filled with cigarette smoke, are at greater risk than everyone else
The toxic effects of secondhand smoke have been so well-documented during the last 30 years that there should be no doubt that smoke emitted from other people’s cigarettes is a real and preventable health risk.
