Talk to a health professional about how hypertension might affect you and your baby during pregnancy

PregnancyIf you are thinking about having a baby and you have high blood pressure, talk with your health professional first.

Taking steps to control your blood pressure before and during pregnancy – and getting regular prenatal care – go a long way toward ensuring your well-being and your baby’s health.

Before becoming pregnant:
Adopt healthy lifestyle habits and ensure that your blood pressure is under control. Simple lifestyle changes such as limiting your salt intake, regular exercise, and losing weight if you are overweight can be helpful.

Talk with your health professional about how hypertension might affect you and your baby during pregnancy, and what you can do to prevent or minimize problems.

If you are currently on medication for your blood pressure, ask your health professional whether you should change medications or the amount your daily dose. In some circumstances your health professional may recommend that you stop taking your medication altogether during pregnancy.

Experts in America, currently recommend avoiding angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II (AII) receptor antagonists during pregnancy; other blood pressure medications may be OK for you to use. However, we recommend that you do not stop or change your medicines without your health professional’s instruction.

While you are pregnant:

– Establish regular prenatal check-ups with your health professional/s
– DO NOT drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes
– Talk with your health professional about any non-prescription medications you are taking or are thinking about taking
– Maintain healthy Lifestyle habits, including moderate exercise

In this book Dr. David Lovell-Smith describes how his patients successfully used diet, lifestyle changes and Transcendental Meditation to bring their blood pressure down.

This book offers new hope and insight for those with high blood pressure but it is not for hypertensives alone. The knowledge which Dr Lovell-Smith presents in his book is timely and relevant, and its exposition is long overdue.
